In 2011, the Dubuque Renaissance Faire moved to Camp Albrecht Acres. Started in 2007 as a fundraiser for the Dubuque Museum of Art, the renaissance festival has found a beautiful new home in nearby Sherrill, Iowa. After careful reflection and three successful years of hosting the festival, the Dubuque Museum of Art decided to “gift” the event to Camp Albrecht Acres, feeling that the renaissance faire more closely matched the mission of this camp for disabled children and young adults in “Providing a unique environment for people with special needs.”
We had a wonderful first year at the Camp - we learned what we do well at the new site and what we should do better! In spite of a bit of rain both days, lots of people came out to "play in the past" with the Queen and her court, jousting knights on horseback, jugglers, minstrels, faeries and more.
Scheduled to open again on May 19 and 20, 2012, the Dubuque Renaissance Faire provides the Tri-state area with a captivating family event enabling visitors of all ages to be enchanted by a romantic and exciting era of blades, battles, pirates and peers. Patrons visiting this Spring will be entertained by renaissance weaponry and fashion, shop for treasures in a unique tented marketplace and partake of foods fit for a King and Queen!
The revenue generated from the renaissance faire will enable Camp Albrecht Acres to continue to offer outstanding services, such as their eight week summer camp program allowing campers to stay a week at a time. Campers fish, hike, swim and take part in arts and crafts, hayrides, dances and a wide range of fun activities during their stay.
